CALLING ALL INTERIORS ENTHUSIASTS!  We all know the common theories out there about the cultural significance of our homes in the past - from the proud Victorian parlours, filled to excess with home furnishings, to the housing boom after World War II when pre-fab houses and large developments sprung up all over Britain in response to the end of a troubled era and a new baby boom. But, we have moved on and now have a whole new set of cultural values to live our lives by. So, why do we furnish our homes to excess? Why do we love a trip to Ikea on a rainy Saturday afternoon or why is bagging a real bargain the Habitat a great buzz? Why do we love interior design and decorating? Why can we not get enough of interiors magazines, interior design programmes and of course, websites? My PhD thesis, 'The Cultural Significance of Interior Design Magazines in the 21st Century' asks all of these questions and seeks to find the answers in our modern more »

Yes! Its the GUESS MY COLOR Game.  Guaranteed to be hours of fun for the whole family and so easy to play!  *****  Simply sit at your computer, log into mydeco and look for rooms that a) look like a 10 million volt bolt of lightening just washed all the color out of them b) look like they caught on fire and everything got burned black, c) have large, garrish, amoeba shaped objects instead of furniture in them.  *****  Then all you have to do is Guess What Color the Walls, Floor or Items in the room were supposed to be.  *****  Thanks to creative room rendering, everyone's a winner when they play GUESS more »

In the midle of the weekend cleaning I just realized I have too much... too much of clothes, papers, furniture, dvds, small things that bring me memories and... stuff, just stuff that I have to clean, to repair or move from my way almost all the time.  And the main realization was than the less I have the less I need. People I loved, places I visited, moments I treasure are all in my mind, they will always be a part of me, I will inherit what I can  to my kids making them part of their memories too.  I don't really need the theater ticket to remember that wonderful night or that candie's box to remember my first boyfriend.  It's all with me.. forever. I realized (another epiphany!) that I am not letting things go, I am not flowing through life like a river (like I should), I am stucked by the things that help me remember, when I don't need that help. So cleaning  "outside" is helping me cleaning my mind, and like in a perfect circle, when I clean inside is easier to clean outside.  I more »

I'm prob leaving the site soon.... I've never joined Facebook etc, because I personally don't think those sites have any particular focus, except maybe socialising and popularity; but MyDeco has a real and useful focal point. Thing is, I'm an artist, not a designer, and the things I really want to talk about and do are somewhat irrelevant here...I can carry on as I have done, but I can't really get stuck in (it's like going somewhere to hear about animals, and being talked to about plants instead - might be v.interesting, but it's besides the point! (lol) I was thinking of starting a group called 'Thinkers Aloud' or something, but it still wouldn't have anything to do with interior design... I entered the OTW competition because I thought I wanted to be noticed by some big names who could take me places....but seeing myself in the top ten - I should be more excited than I am...I should be excited, full stop...instead, I'm reminding myself that I'm an independent person more »

OMG....so you read my blog.........and decided to give me another 20votes?! (LOL) You guys! I thought I was cheeky...but thank you so much. I think I was having a crisis of confidence - if that's what it's called. When I spend a certain amount of time somewhere, I start analysing what am I doing there? Is it long-term? Do I really fit in?! ...somehow talking myself out of it....(it's me - not you, as they say). But you've given me some good advice and reassurance, which I really appreciate (and really needed) and you've reminded me of things I had ignored (like the fact that there ARE different categories, aren't there?) Thank you for everything, my dear and new-found friends. Nervousness is gradually turning into excitement, and my head is cleared: so I guess there's nothing left for me to do but sign the lease and move in permanently ;0) It really is good to talk :0) xxx

The Gentleman's Guide to Interiors Success: PT I.

The secret diary of an Interiors Playboy

In 1978 my grandfather sat me down on his knee and said to me: ‘Joe, if you want to get good sex, you must first  look inside’. At first, I thought he was referring to in innate self-confidence and a prerequisite for personal contentment before approaching women, but throughout the course of the conversation it transpired that he was referring in fact to something quite different: my apartment. Every discerning gentleman recognizes the importance that one’s interior style plays upon their social life. Whenever a guest is welcomed they immediately form an opinion of a person based upon the place in which they live.  Drab wallpaper or tatty duvet = you’re not getting laid tonight. Photos of the time you donated £1 million to the Panda Sanctuary and saved that child from the burning building = home run. It really is that simple. And so it is for this reason that I am posting this blog. Think of it as my bit for charity, if you will  - a more »

As a City Dweller (specifically, New York), one of the most common challenges I hear from felllow City folk is how to create a functional, stylish, budget-friendly space.  As an animal lover, I need to make the place pet friendly as well. This weekend begins my quest to find cheap, stylish furnishings for my new abode.  I plan to post the before and afters on my profile.  I'm headed to Target and IKEA first!  I may check out some used items on Craigslist.  I also have a bookcase (found curbside) that I need to paint- it's hunter green with country-kitchen style apples on the top.  Yikes! I will be sure to share any tips...and am open to any comments or tips from mydeco comrades. Cheers, Rachel

The chair of your dreams

As I sit here munching my lunch, I have started pondering what would be the chair of your dreams? some people may like a gadget laden future tech monster that is perhaps an extension of Joey's la-z-boy. Others may like a super stylish design reminiscent of a Jimmy Choo in the best silk velvet money can buy. I often ponder these things, as unless you don't know, I design and make chairs. (see www.stevenbiddulph.com) Has the chair of your dreams already been produced? are you nurturing a cash fund to buy it? or is it cheap and plentiful?  Does the world need another chair? So many questions, tell me what you think. Sit comfortably. Steven.
