About Mr and Mrs Smith
Our books and website guide you around the most stylish and individual hotels in the world, from Amsterdam to Zambia.
Our insider knowledge tells you the best room or suite to ask for, where to head for the tastiest lunch, and signposts the best beaches and picnic spots. We’ve even researched what’s going on around each hotel, so you can make the most of your time.
Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel Collections
In brief, it’s a definitive guide to 52 weeks of carefully selected, utterly unmissable events across the continent. A beautifully designed and visually striking compilation of exciting destinations, revealing insider information and practical advice on some of the most sought-after highlights of the social calendar, as well as some downright unusual happenings.
Overviews help the reader select and tailor 12 eventful months according to mood, schedule and budget. A free membership card that comes with the book provides access to a unique online diary, which helps ensure planning goes seamlessly.
Each of the hotels we feature is judged on its own merits. The first thing we do is personally visit each property and then, if we think it is suitable for our collection, we invite taste-makers and journalists to review our hotels anonymously. We’ll always send two people to stay two nights, and write up their experience in an amusing and informative way, so our readers know what it feels like to spend the weekend there. Any hotels reviewed negatively are not included in the collection, ensuring that Mr & Mrs Smith’s cherry-picked selection remains informed and exclusive.
It’s hard to summarise what makes a hotel ‘Smith’. It’s a combination of style, quality, first-class service and individuality, not to mention the destination itself. ‘Boutique’ is, of course, a hugely overused description, but Mr & Mrs Smith knows how to differentiate between the guesthouse that’s put scallops on its menu and some flock wallpaper up in the bedrooms, and the real thing. We try to highlight places that we would love to spend a weekend at, whether it’s a restaurant with rooms or a luxury spa retreat.
Our long-awaited, new Mr & Mrs Smith hotel guide, UK/Ireland Volume 2, has also just been published. This showcases some extremely stylish places to stay, from remote corners of the Scottish Highlands to secret nooks in the Cotswolds. There’s a mix of fabulous boutique hotels, as well as chic guesthouses and romantic inns. The guide is not just an update of our bestselling 2003 Smith UK/Ireland book, but contains a new selection of hotels, including just-opened properties as well as a tiny handful from the first edition that have had a serious facelift. Images are specially commissioned from top photographer Adrian Houston and, as always, our reviews are entertaining, irreverent and informative. This year’s ‘hotel inspectors’ include fashion designer Roland Mouret, lingerie expert Serena Rees and Groove Armada’s Tom Findlay.
