  • About lrgower

The world of design is my new playground and I am learning on my feet. Beach chic decor, panelling, white bed linen, bamboo, pewter and rattan define my current dream style. I absolutely love a good stripe. I'm less fond of crazy florals, velvet, design imitations or anything that looks like it came out of grandma's closet. Watch this space for the latest insider goss from the design scene...

  • A bloom amongst the blooms

Cheesy, certainly, but there's something about flowers that just make people's eyes flutter isn't there? I have just walked through the office with a bouquet for a friend who has invited me round for dinner this evening, and every single person who has spotted me has looked on questioningly. Their faces beg - did I receive the flowers from a heart-throb romantic lover? So in answer to any of you who are reading this - no, I'm going round to a friend's for dinner. And I would LOVE to send a bouquet to my grandmother in South Africa. I know it would make her day!

Do flowers make your eyes flutter? Are you allergic to pollen?

  • Iittala flagship store opens on Regent Street

The press launch of Scandanavian design powerhouse IIttala's flagship store  on Regent Street was held this morning. The store opened a few weeks back and they are still in the process of expanding to create a downstairs - at the moment it's just one floor - but it is so far looking delightful, and the bright coloured glass designs on display tease the eye and are very on trend (bright primaries are making quite an appearance this season). Alvar Aalto's signature curvy trademark is predictably everywhere. Had the pleasure of meeting two of Iittala's fabulous designers, Klaus Haapaniemi who se Taika coffee cup has recently been added to his collection for the brand, and Italian artist and designer Giorgio Vigna, whose glass birds for the company have won great acclaim. Also had a chat with Juha Vesamaki, Iittala's visual concept manager who was in town from Helsinki. He told me a bit about what went into designing the Regent Street layout. • Best radio station

Reggaton is apparently taking the UK by (underground) storm. I reckon its great music to get you going to while you do some home repairs. Get the Latino vibe with La Kalle, a really funk New York based station that I have fallen in love with!! http://www.univision.com/content/channel.jhtml?chid=9486&schid=9497

  • Bike blues

Have returned from my 600km bike ride from Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam to Siem Riep in Cambodia in one piece minues a couple of knee injuries. The trip was off to a bad start when, on the way to the airport, I realised I had forgotten to pack any trainers.... error. Therefore spent my first day in Ho Chi Minh negotiating trainer prices with my dear father in the heat of the day. Ah the joys. The cycling was immense, the views spectacular, and best illustrated by my pics so have a look! Think everybody with an ounce of adventure should take part in a charity challenge- they really are food for the body and soul, and I am sorely tempted to do a repeat next year if I haven't permanently damaged my knees. Althought if I don't see another bowl of rice and tofu ever again, I will be perfectly content. Signging out...

  • Great quote

Being a journalist, now with an avid interest in all things design, I came across a quote this afternoon that has brought the two together fr me. It's by William Morris, Arts & Crafts iconoclast, and he said: "It took years for me to understand that words are often as important as experience, because words make experience last." Love it.
