  • About tombaker

I'm Tom and I'm a surveyor living in Romford. I'm obviously interested in construction and planning but also looking to improve my interior design skills - it's nice to see the other side of the housing construction industry for a change!

  • If I had a million dollars...

‘I would buy a house’, or so the song goes. Except, really, I wouldn’t. I would buy myself a house. And it would probably be the best house in the world. Just as every city has its Playboy Mansion, I’m sure that even Surbiton would be greatful for my crib. Imagine ‘Shagpad Towers’ rising out of the gridlocked streets, hovering in the air to display its gated walls and 18 bedrooms, all while the tired rumble of commuters pass it by. Oh yes, if I bought a house, it would be the best house in the world. Who’s with me?

  • The difference between men and women in design

Call me a typical bloke, but I really can’t even begin to understand what goes through a woman’s mind when she’s shopping for furniture. When it comes to shoes you expect illogicality, but furniture is surely much less subjective and easier to pick? WRONG. I’ve just got back from a three-hour ‘expedition’ (without the tents, support unit and land rover) to find ourselves a new bed. Now, I’m no expect when it comes to buying furniture, but to me I’m not particularly concerned about how a bed looks – after all, once you’ve put the sheets, valance sheet, duvets and pillows on it there’s not much left to see. Or at least that’s what I thought - though clearly not what Sarah (my GF) thinks. For her it’s about as tortuous as picking babies’ names. A large part of the problem is that, fundamentally, men and women want different things from furniture. Men want functionality over style – we want a more »

  • Finally moved house

We’ve got the keys: we’re now officially in the new place. We’re not there full-time yet, though. We’ll be moving thing in over the next several days. I figure we’ll be completely in the new place by Sunday. Feels great to be there – we’ll be moving our stuff in over the next week or so, and staying over for the first time on Sunday. The place is closer to the station, which means more of a lie-in. Awesome.
