ACW-71514 : Altar Cabinet in Poplar Wood

Beijing, circa 1900 The thick frames and solid style of this cabinet are typical of furniture from Beijing , where the focus was often on practicality against the harsh elements rather than any ornate decoration. The raised 'flanges' at each end of the extended top show that this would have had some religious use – most likely to hold offerings to ancestors in the home. The cabinet is made from poplar, a wood more commonly used in decorative panels on furniture rather than for an entire piece. The simple style and stripped back finish mean that this will fit easily into a modern home. With three drawers above the two doors, it would be ideal as a sideboard or for general storage in a living room. In stock for delivery within 3-4 weeks. |
