Despite what we would like to believe, it’s not always what’s on the inside that counts. Make even the smallest gifts look special by wrapping them with thought, care, and some sparkly extras. Here’s a selection of our favourite Christmas wrapping...

Decorating your presents doesn’t have to add pounds to their cost. Take inspiration from what’s naturally available this time of year – a couple of sprigs of holly carefully attached to your wrapping is cheap and festive. Match with a decorative accessory like these fairtrade Window Bugz from South Africa (from £3.99) and get a great-looking gift for under a fiver.

  • Lacy Christmas Borders

    Lace is ace:

If the paper-and-ribbon combo is your wrapping staple, why not swap traditional trimmings for these Lacy Christmas Borders (£4.99) from Lakeland? In seasonal designs of Christmas trees, snowflakes, stockings and baubles, they give an edge to block-coloured wrapping paper, and the self-adhesive backing couldn’t be easier to apply. Wrap the white borders around black paper for a seasonal-chic, monochrome gift.

  • Mini Zinc Hearts

    Chalked up:

Get that old school-board feel with these mini zinc hearts, £12.50 for six from notonthehigh street.com. Write your message in chalk, attach to your gift with the twine supplied, and remember life’s simpler days. Just make sure the note doesn’t rub off before it reaches your loved one!

  • Gift Wrap - Rapid Wrap Pack

    Rapid wrapping:

If you’re prone to getting more sticky tape on your hands than on the paper, then opt for these pop-in-and-seal bags. Minimum fuss, maximimum shiny-wrapping effect. Twelve bags in assorted sizes, £9.99 from Urchin.

  • spot printed paper

    Spotty colour:

Sticking (no pun intended) to the traditional red, green, gold and silver Christmas palette can make wrappings look so passé. And there’s really no need. Paperchase consistently offers exciting paper designs, and these bright primary colours are right on trend.

  • Metallic Marker Pens

    Molten markers:

You’ve done the hard work buying the present – so why ruin the card by writing it in an old biro? Messages will look much more festive in these gold and silver markers from Lakeland, £4.99 for two. If you’re feeling really creative, buy white wrapping paper and decorate it yourself with festive designs. Jingle all the way.

  • John Lewis Snowflake Gift Bag, Large, White and Red

    Handy bag:

There’s no substitute for popping gifts in a stylish bag or box to increase anticipation. John Lewis does a great range of contemporary designs, like this large red and white Snowflake gift bag, £2.50. Stuff with tissue paper for added glamour and, voilà, you’re done.

  • Decoupage Xmas Gift Wrap Set (2 Sheets of Brown Wrapping Paper, Pack of Pictures & Gift Tags)

    Retro tradition:

If shop-bought tree and snowflake prints are stifling your creative streak, get this decoupage gift wrap set, £4.95 from the Dotcom gift shop, and do-it-yourself. Arrange the classic nativity picture tags at random on the brown paper and feel good that if you didn’t make the gift, at least the wrapping is personal.

  • set of three gift boxes

    Splash out:

If you’ve gone for gold with your pressies, don’t then undervalue them with cheap wrapping. These embellished gift boxes, £18.45 for three from Dibor, will be treasured long after the tinsel's come down. Available in four colours and designs.
