At home with... Kelly Hoppen

Interior designer Kelly Hoppen, one of the influential mydeco Design Board, won the European Woman of Achievement Award for Entrepreneurship last year. She talks to mydeco about her late father, her stepdaughter Sienna Miller and Marilyn Monroe.

When I was little... I kept changing my bedroom around which drove my parents crazy. I set up my first interior design studio when I was only 17. My business has gradually evolved into other areas like retail, publishing and commercial commissions.

I live in... Battersea but am selling the property to move back towards Notting Hill and Chelsea to be closer to friends and family. I'm really excited about the prospects of designing a new home.

My most sentimental possession is... a picture of my dad who passed away when I was a teenager. The photo shows him relaxed and smiling just the way I remember him. It's in a clear photo frame on my dressing table and is one of the first things I look at in the morning.

Squint Limited is great for... individual quirky pieces that really draw the eye towards them and make great focal points. Squint specialise in upholstering vintage chairs and furniture.

The best room in this apartment... is the main open plan kitchen, living and dining room area. It's amazing for entertaining as you go from a formal dining experience to informal coffees around the sofas or the kitchen area.

I never leave without buying something from... Alfies Antique Market which has amazing individual and vintage pieces.

Online I check... John Lewis for new essential items.

The greatest things in my life are...are my daughter Natasha and my step daughters Savannah and Sienna.

I swear by... a neutral canvas – dark wooden floor against plain white or neutral coloured walls, neutral textured upholstery and dark wooden furniture.

Homes are no longer ... showpieces, but want to be lived in and added to over the years.

My favorite classics are... the Barcelona Chair or India Mahdavi's bar stools.

I am always looking to... add to my art collection.

I love... photography – particularly the work of Peter Beard, Flip Schulke and Desiree Dolron. I also collect photographs of Marylin Monroe.

Just as in fashion... people have started to mix different styles in their homes – vintage pieces are mixed with new contemporary ones.

Trends ... keep going towards expressing your individual style whilst drawing inspiration from very different sources and eras.

I am most proud of... the latest addition to my portfolio – the Murmuri Hotel in Barcelona.

It marries...the classic Kelly Hoppen look with my more recent style of adding splashes of colour and eclectic pieces to the mix.

If my house was burning down, I would grab... my photographs, my mobile and my taupe Birkin handbag.
