If you are into curtain making and need to make linings, keep an eye on the charity shops for old sheets, duvet covers etc, especially plain dyed ones. They make great linings as they are particularly wide - so no seaming required up the middle.

When my boyfriend glossed the radiator and managed to get drips from the brush on the floor (and then left them til he had finished painting and they had dried) I used a Mr Muscle Kitchen Wipe and it completely got rid of it

I was almost at my wits-end with not being able to save my 3d-room images, but I think I've stumbled on something handy... After saving an image, if it says,'having probs- try later': go to your profile page, and click on 'rooms'(in the left-hand column). I had a case today where I saved my image - but it said I could not save and only the 'save as' tab was active; yet when I tried again, it said I already had that name saved...I tried a few more times and changed the name back and forth, but it was when I went to my profile and clicked on my rooms(not the tab next to settings)that 6 or 7 copies of my room showed up. Clicking the room-tab only showed me the images of rooms which had been confirmed as saved, but clicking 'rooms' on the left, acted a bit like a refresh button and the images came up in response. Hope it helps

Permanent marker stains on appliances and counter tops can be removed by using alcohol on a paper towel.

In the sales it's easy to buy on impulse buy and try to design the room around the items you've bought. Instead, have an idea of what you want the room to look like before you shop and only pick items consistent with the impression you're trying to convey.

How to get the best out of your Summer Sale shopping: (I just posted this in the Summer Sale Group, but thought it might be useful for a wider audience -- sorry if you're reading it twice!) Just thought I would share some insider knowledge, as I am a former Home Furnishings Buyer for some of the high street's biggest names, and have a few tips to share. 1. Shop early if there's something you've been looking at for a long time. If you've waited forever for the Missoni bedlinen or Kartell table lamp to be marked down, chances are that someone else has been too! Get in early to make sure you snap up that killer purchase. 2. Sales are a great time to stock up on basics - glassware, bed linen, bath linen, crockery and china are usually reduced significantly (and who wants to spend full price on that kind of stuff anyway? It's the home funishings equivalent of pyjamas!). 3. Don't be fooled by product called 'Special Offers' -- this is product that has been bought especially for the sales. Stores buy it in cheap, mark it way up before the sale, and then discount it to what it should really be priced for. So essentially, even when you buy it at a discounted price, you're actually paying full price! Now, if you love it and think it's worth it, go ahead and buy -- just be aware... 4. If you are determined to brave the high street and buy something in person, you might be able to haggle a little bit on ex-display items (like bigger pieces of furniture). Especially as the sale progresses, stores will be eager to get rid of this slightly lived-in product -- and may be prepared to be flexible on the price. Just make sure you're talking to someone who is in a position to bargain, like the department or shop floor manager. This tends to work better in smaller, independent retailers rather than the big chains. Also, all ex-display stock is sold as-is, so make sure you look it over carefully before buying. Nothing worse than buying a sofa cheap (that you can't return) and then discovering a huge inkstain on the back of a cushion. 5. If you just want to bag a bargain, wait until the bitter end. Most retailers need to get rid of all of their sale product to make way for next season's new stock, so if you hang in there (and aren't all that fussed if it's not the colour cushion you were dying for), you can pick up some real doozies! I've seen duvet sets sold for £5, cushions go for 2 for £10, and Buy 1 get 2 free on votives. And I'm not talking about Primark, either! Hope this is helpful, and hope you find some super sale stock. Happy shopping!

I was told this by a tutor when I was puuting together my Tex Print portfolio: When mounting up portfolio work, stick a strip of cellotape on the back of your work before attaching double sided tape. This ensures easy removal of your work when the paper starts to get a bit tatty and you want to remount it.

To minimalise clutter I only use candles or practical objects as ornaments. I also choose furniture created for storage to hide mess! Cushions really help to accessorise without clutter and can add colour to an otherwise dull room. You don't have to cover every surface with something, I find this hard but then I think, the more accessories/ornaments I have, the more I have to dust! Vases and flowers bring sunshine and colour to your home with minimum fuss!
